Create A Productive Happy Team

First, let’s be clear there is no ‘perfect’ team. It doesn’t exist.

“If you look for perfection, you’ll never be satisfied,” Leo Tolstoy.

Have no fear though, creating a ‘dream team’ can be a reality. It takes time, devotion, practice, and self-learning. If you have the desire, the team will meet you there.

The goal is to ensure each person is working predominantly from their genius zone. This approach maximizes productivity, as ‘time flies’ when individuals are fully immersed in tasks, not because they must, but because they genuinely find them enjoyable!

While striving to keep the team working within their genius zone, it’s important to note that challenges and moments that push the team to their limits are still part of the equation! This holds especially true in the context of family businesses – those familial dynamics can really test patience at times.  Whether you’re a family member or not, navigating the emotional currents stemming from personal history can be quite a handful when emotions are escalated at work.

So how do you keep emotions in check, respect in order, systems running smoothly, and profit pouring in? The key to a dream team is that they want to work, and they practice good boundaries by leaving their baggage at the door (because it’s always waiting for them when they clock out, lol).

Dream teams are created when open communication is developed, appreciated, and invited. It’s where differences are valued. In fact, they are necessary for any business to thrive across generations, driving innovation and adaptability, ultimately paving the way for long-term success in a rapidly changing world.

Just think of all the changes that have happened over the years. A thriving legacy family business will have seen a lot of change, whether it’s surviving a pandemic, prohibition, war, or drought. Change is the one constant we can count on. Technology is advancing faster now than ever before. If you don’t fasten your seat belt and adapt to these changes, you may be left behind closing up shop or selling to the next person with the sparkle in their eye, who believes they see how it can be done!

A productive, happy team exists. It doesn’t mean there aren’t hard days, long challenges, or tasks that seem near impossible. It means their compass points north, they choose optimism most times, and invite humor in daily. They avoid gossip, knowing it’s a pure waste of their own precious time. Each team member takes pride in themself and their work.

Here are 5 key steps you can take as you build your dream team to enhance productivity, while minimizing drama:

1. Have a clear company culture in place.

Establishing a clear company culture helps define the values, beliefs, and behaviors that are expected from all team members. It sets the tone for how people interact and work together. A well-defined culture helps attract like-minded individuals who align with your company’s mission and values.

2. Create an environment of respect.

Respect is the foundation of any healthy work environment. Encourage open communication and ensure that all team members treat each other with respect and courtesy. Address any disrespectful behavior promptly to maintain a positive atmosphere.

3. Provide & receive open feedback.

Open and constructive feedback is essential for personal and professional growth. Create a culture where team members feel comfortable providing feedback to one another, including managers and leaders. Constructive feedback can lead to continuous improvement and better teamwork.

4. Celebrate success, even the smaller steps.

Recognizing and celebrating achievements, both big and small, boosts morale and motivation within the team. It also reinforces the idea that focus, and dedication are valued and appreciated. Celebrations can be in morning meetings, 1:1 or team building sessions.

5. Value the diversity the team brings.

A diverse team brings different perspectives, skills, and experiences to the table. Embrace this diversity and create an inclusive environment where everyone’s contributions are valued. Encourage diverse viewpoints in decision-making and problem-solving processes.

When you put into practice these 5 actions, your efforts will make a difference, even if you can’t see it at first. It takes time for the team to develop. You can also consider doing team-building exercises.

Keep in mind, there’s no perfect team, mistakes happen, and life always gives us challenges. However, there are productive, happy teams that appreciate their opportunities, learn from each other’s differences, lean on each other’s strengths, and hold a common vision.
